Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) — Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele called on Democratic Senator Harry Reid to step down as majority leader over comments he made about then-presidential candidate Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign.
Steele said Reid, of Nevada, should suffer the same sanction as former Republican Senator Trent Lott, who was forced out of his leadership role in 2002 for comments about a 1948 segregationist campaign.
Obama yesterday accepted Reid’s apology for the remarks, in which he said the U.S. was ready to elect a black president, especially someone like Obama who is “light skinned” and speaks “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”
Reid was quoted in an excerpt from a book on the campaign that was posted on the Web site of The Atlantic. The revelation may add to Reid’s difficulties in an already tough 2010 re- election campaign and comes as Obama is counting on Reid to help push health-care legislation through Congress.
Obama, a Democrat, said in a statement released yesterday that he received a phone call from Reid, and that while the Nevada senator’s comments were “unfortunate,” he accepted the apology “without question.”
“I’ve seen the passionate leadership he’s shown on issues of social justice and I know what’s in his heart,” Obama said yesterday. “As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.” Complete Story

Ah yes, the Double Standard DemocRATS have different set of rules that applies to them than anyone who opposes their views. They would NEVER kick one of their own to the curb but for the underlings who disagree, would most certainly be subject to Trent Lott treatment! The tired race card subject IS ONLY THEIRS TO PLAY whenever it helps move their socialist agenda forward. Couldn’t agree more w/Chairman Steele’s request, BUT Reid will be in a new line of work after Nov. 2, 2010; in the meantime, allowing him to stay will give him 10 more months to seal his fate and tighten the noose around his own neck. He’s toast anyway you look at it.
No double standards when it comes to Trent Lott?
Lott’s comments
Lott was elected majority leader in November, but his political standing eroded in Washington because of the controversy surrounding his praise of Strom Thurmond’s 1948 segregationist campaign for the presidency.
The remarks — suggesting the nation would have been better off had Thurmond been elected — drew a strong rebuke from, among others, President Bush, who called them “offensive” and “wrong.”
Lott, despite several apologies, never managed to contain the criticism from Democrats and — more importantly — conservatives and Republicans. His legislative record on civil rights was scrutinized, and past statements about Thurmond’s 1948 candidacy were also criticized.
“I have concluded that the current controversy has completely overshadowed our efforts to expand the American dream to all Americans,” Sen. Christopher Bond, R-Missouri, said in a statement Friday, announcing his support for Frist even before Lott stepped aside. Source: http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/12/20/lott.controversy/
